Ha Giang, in northern Vietnam, is among the most impressive mountainous regions in the world .

The famous Ha Giang loop — a three or four day motorbike tour where you will travel through wild landscapes of terraced rice paddies, vertiginous cliffs and suspension bridges, while discovering the way of life of the Hmong, an ethnic group in Vietnam.

what touched me

I was amazed by the surrounding landscapes and touched by the lives of the Hmong people who warmly welcomed me throughout this escape.

We offered the children some chocolate bars: their happiness at this discreet sign was contagious, although they were very reserved at first.

I was fortunate enough to enter their living space, a self-sufficient micro-society composed solely of women and children. The men were either absent or deceased, and life revolved around farming and livestock. Their dark house, without running water or electricity, exuded authenticity. They slept on the bare floor and cooked directly over the fire, in an atmosphere thick with the smell of cattle.

Their faces bore the marks of a hard life , but also a sincere gratitude. This close-knit family had very little, yet their unity and simplicity commanded respect.

Watching all of this brought me back to my own comfort, to my privileged position.

To be grateful for what we have , regardless of our circumstances.

Ha Giang reminded me of the essentials: sometimes very little is needed to be happy, and true connections are enough to feel rich.

What I recommend

• Prepare yourself well if you are driving alone, especially for mountain roads because motorcycles are manual.

• Opt for a guided tour with a local guide (Easyrider) to enjoy the scenery and stay safe.

• Respect the locals and their way of life. Offer some biscuits or chocolate to the children.
